What To Consider When Renting A Gooseneck Trailer
Doing your research before you buy or rent a gooseneck can pay off!
Things to Consider
- How will you be using the trailer? Think about loading, unloading, ramps, securing the load, pick-up and drop-off points and available space to park.
- How much weight will you be loading on the trailer? GVWR (Gross Vehicle Weight Rating) means the empty weight of the trailer plus the weight of your load. Be sure that you will not exceed this weight.
- How will you load the trailer? A safe and secure load is the driver's responsibility. Heavy weight should be loaded over the trailer axles. If you load the entire trailer, and then you off-load from the back, the remainder of your load at the front of the trailer should be moved back over the axles with approximately 40% at the rear and 60% toward the front of the trailer.
- What is the width you will need? 8.5 feet is the legal limit of any trailer. Hanging over requires a permit.
- Do you have a truck adequate for the trailer and load? A minimum of 3/4 ton truck is required with a 2 5/16" ball mounted in the be of the truck. Make sure you have a working 7 pin round plug for lights and electric brakes.
- Do you have class A license? Federal regulations require drivers to have a valid class A CDL license even if the trailer is empty and has a weight rating that exceeds 26,000 pounds. Many state laws are even more strict with a lesser weight requirement.
